Is Getting A Base Tan Prior To Vacation Safe?

The answer is NO! According to Dr. Bennion, “Tanning is the body’s response to skin cell damage; therfore, when one is tanning one is causing skin cell death. In other words there is no SAFE tan.” UVA Rays (tanning bed radiation) has been linked to skin cancer, including melanomas. Melanomas are the leading medical cause of death in women between the ages of 21 and 31. UVA tans don’t protect one’s skin as well as a normal tan because the brown pigment (melanin) with a UVA tan stays in the lower layers of the skin so the upper layer skin cells are still exposed to the full effect of the sun.
